From Silence searches for the quiet, the voids, the other-worldly. In this work, I roam at dusk amidst the darkening landscape. Almost habitually, whether walking or driving, I am searching. I look for scenes that haunt me or bring to mind faded memories. This is coupled with me confronting questions that seep from my childhood. I force myself to face the disquiet that lies within me. All the while, I gaze into the tension of my past and my children’s future.Give me a childhood again and I
How we imagine space
Over the years more and more of space is unfolding before our eyes. It seem every day new systems, planets are being discovered. The space race is back on. Independent companies and government organisations are all talking of going to mars, back to the moon and virgin is going to offer space flight this year - 2018, maybe. The extraordinary images being sent back by Hubble are other worldly and spectacular to say the least. What is surprising is that the worlds offered by the images are imagined.
Sauna: Requiem from the North
A poetic series on life in one of Sweden’s remote archipelagos—shot against a stark, immobile landscape over a period of 20 years as a family grows, lives, ages, and diminishes. This is a story of my family and our home in Norrbotten, Sweden. I have been taking photos of my family at the sea by our summer house in the Kalix archipelago over a period of 20 years. The series is an attempt to tell the story of the people and landscape of northern Sweden through the ritual of the sauna. Here, in this
The faces of China
For a period of time between 2011 and 2015 I was fortunate to visit China on 7 occasions. 5 of the visits were to Guizhou but additionally I visited Sichuan, Gansu and Beijing. My first visit we travelled around in a 4x4. The roads were long and in the main bumpy. Travelling from village to village you could not help notice construction and building on a massive scale.Guizhou as a major coal producing province had closed most of the mines. Faced with unemployment and and poverty the government
Wye Dean Rally 2017
Having followed and documented the building of this Mk2 Ford for 18 months the day finally arrived to rally.
Sean Baldwin of Autofix in Coleford drove all 8 stages on terrible road conditions. He finished 3rd in class and overall a respectable 32. Over 30 cars didn't make it.
I managed to get to 2 locations and 15 pictures in low light conditions and panning. So realistically after all this time and hundreds of images of the build, this is the only rally shot. More to come....
Apple Announces HEIF
Apple just offered up JPEG’s replacement, and it couldn’t come soon enough.
Apple began telegraphing this move a year ago at the 2016 conference. They had rebuilt the iPhone’s image pipeline to fully support both wide and deep color (capturing 10-bit RAW straight from the camera sensors). The one thing that was clearly missing, though, was a way to save those files without resorting to lossless compression.
1 week to go.I have spent the last 18 months following Shawn Baldwin of Autofix building his Ford Mk2. Next weekend will be his first outing rallying in the Wyedean Rally in the Forest of Dean. Let’s hope he doesn’t break it. This will be the final phase of the project. Watch this space. The photographs are from the test track.
The Forest of Dean
Having lived in many countries and many towns around the UK I have arrived in the forest of dean. An ancient forest in the heart of Gloucestershire. Unlike the many cities and towns full of hustle and bustle I enjoy the tranquility and freshness on offer here.
Here are some photos out and about.
